Szklarska Poreba it is a town beautifully located in the valley of the Kamienna River and its tributaries at the height of 440 - 886 m above sea - level, surrounded from the south by the slopes of Karkonosze, with Mt. Szrenica (1362 m AMSL) towering over the town, from the north by the Jizera Mountains with the High Stone (1058 m AMSL) and the Black Mountain (965m AMSL), and from the East by the Foothills of Karkonosze, separating the town from Jeleniogorska Valley. Evaluations of the Research and Professional Activities of the Institutes of the CAS

5.5. 2016 | The Czech Academy of Sciences published the results of the Evaluation of the Research and Professional activities of the 54 Institutes of the CAS in period 2010-2014 . The research activities of Czech Academics reviewed over 1,400 experts from 50 countries. Evaluation process had two consecutive phases and lasted from April 2015 to March 2016. Evaluation documents for the individual institutes of the CAS can be downloaded at links below. Components of the package for each individual institute of the CAS are: (1) Characteristics of main research directions investigated at the institute and the achievements including Research Reports of the teams in the period 2010�2014, (2) Institute and Team Quality Profiles � Results of the Phase I of the Evaluation, (3) Final Report on the Evaluation of the Institute and Teams � Results of the Phase II of the Evaluation, (4) Statement from the Director of the Institute on the Final Report. On points 3 and 4 are displayed as many documents as were the number of field commissions evaluating the respective institute (up to 5).

5.12. 2015 | More than sixty experts from the Czech Republic attended workshop held in the main building of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague on 3th December 2015. It was dedicated to appealing topic of Natural hazards around us � opinions of European experts on natural and social environment changes�. The audience included not only experts form field of Earth Sciences but also professionals from civil protection, local governments, private companies and member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The lecturers were focused on landslides, debris flows, rock falls and their negative impacts on society. The workshop was organized by Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the CAS (IRSM CAS) within the program Strategy AV21� which is dedicated to deliver the latest research results to the involved experts and public including civil protection, state and local administration and potentially affected inhabitants. A catastrophic event of rhyolitic explosive volcanism preserved the plant ecosystem in situ as a whole. This paper by Petra Matysova and Ronny Roßler (Vesmir 93, 700-705 2014/12) deals with the newest scientific results crosswise geological branches based on miscellaneous data gained from a recent Chemnitz excavation.

This field work includes research on wide range of natural hazards such as dynamic slope movements, neotectonics and glacial lake outburst floods. The IPL Project No.179 "Database of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)" has been adopted under the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) at the Board of Representatives in Paris 2012. 11.7. 2014 | The International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) has selected Charles University, Faculty of Science and Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the ASCR to be one of its 15 World Centers of Excellence during the World Landslide Forum 3 in Beijing, China in the beginning of June. The World Landslide Forum III. was organized under the theme Landslide Risk Mitigation: Toward a Safer Geo-Environment. Dr. Vit Vilimek (Leader of WCoE 2011-2014), Charles University, Faculty of Science, Czech Republic, received the certificate from Dr. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, during the forum. The World Centers of Excellence for landslides are selected by the Global Promotion Committee of the International Program on Landslides (IPL).

Unique Research on the Svalbard Islands

The measurements in this corner of the world are done by fellows from the Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences who use a special Czech-made 3-D device, TM71, to gauge all relative movements of two rock masses with high precision.
